The Legislative Committee on Economic Development and International Relations, chaired by Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, will take a close look at that topic when it meets at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the Canaday Technology Center at Walla Walla University. According to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service survey, Washington anglers in 2001 generated $854 million in spending statewide, placing the state eighth nationally. Hunters generated another $350 million in spending. All together fishers, hunters and wildlife viewers generated an astounding $2.18 billion in spending throughout the state in 2001. “We know scores of Washingtonians are out in the woods or on the water every chance they get,” said Lt. Gov. Owen, an avid sportsman himself. “This committee will take a look at the economic impacts of this industry, hear about some of the issues facing hunters and fishers and learn more about ways we can ensure a sustainable habitat and resource so these activities can be enjoyed by future generations.” The committee, made up of 13 legislators, will first hear from Jeffrey Koenings, director of the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. Koenings will provide an overview of sustainable wildlife programs and the economics of sport fishing and hunting. Additional presenters include:
