Joint legislative
committee meeting VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Two legislative committees that focus on economic development travel to British Columbia next week to learn about critical issues common between the province and Washington state. The Legislative Committee on Economic Development and International Relations (LCEDIR), chaired by Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, and the Senate Committee on Economic Development, Trade and Management (EDTM) will convene at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at the 2010 Commerce Centre at 800 Robson Street in Vancouver. “British Columbia and Washington state share a common geography and enjoy a unique relationship based on mutual needs,” said Lt. Gov. Owen. “At this joint meeting we will search for ways to strengthen economic relations and reduce trade barriers.” The lieutenant governor said the committees will also discuss current border crossing issues and review cooperative arrangements for the 2010 winter Olympics in Vancouver. The two-day forum, sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER), will focus on the “Innovation Economy” and include topics such as fostering the culture of innovation, technology-based economic development initiatives and regional challenges and opportunities. LCEDIR members include Senators Jerome Delvin, Tracey Eide, Mike Hewitt, Jim Kastama, Derek Kilmer; Cheryl Pflug and Paull Shin and Representatives Bruce Chandler, Bob Hasegawa, Phyllis Gutierrez Kenney, Lynn Kessler, Dan Roach and Mary Skinner. EDTM Committee Members include Senators Kastama, Kilmer, Shin, Jim Clements, Claudia Kauffman and Joe Zarelli.
