Lt. Governor Owen to open Sichuan photo exhibit

SEATTLE – Lt. Governor Brad Owen will kick off the debut of “Charming Sichuan,” a two-week photo exhibition at the Washington Convention and Trade Center, with a reception from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the center.

The exhibit will feature a collection of photographs of the people and landscape of Sichuan, a province of 83 million people located in the southwest part of China that has had a “sister state” affiliation with Washington since 1982. The exhibit is presented by the Sichuan Provincial Bureau of Tourism to help promote tourism, cooperation and understanding between the two countries. The photos include the work of leading photographers in Sichuan.

Lt. Governor Owen, who led a Washington state delegation to China in May, said the selection of Seattle for the exhibit signifies the importance of Washington state to the provincial and Chinese government and is also one of the many ongoing dividends of the trade trips.

“Sichuan is a beautiful province bordered by mountains and features a great variety of landscapes, similar to Washington state,” Owen said. “Both have areas of stunning natural beauty and ruggedness found in few parts of the world.”

When Owen was in China he accepted a gift to the state of Washington from Zhang Zhongwei, the governor of Sichuan, of a large sculpture “Bronze Mask with Protruding Eyes.” That mask is now here and will be among the items on display.

This exhibit will be open for public viewing through Sept. 30 weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Room 2B, level 2 North, Washington State Convention and Trade Center, 800 Convention Place, Seattle.
