Chinese disabled performance troupe at Benaroya May 16

Chinese dance, music and poetry presented by 45 physically or mentally impaired entertainers from throughout China will perform at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle.

The “My Dream” performance of the Chinese Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe, which has been praised at venues around the world for its exceptional artistry, will showcase the talents of artists who have overcome considerable difficulties and hardships to capture the hearts of thousands.

The disabled troupe has performed in 40 countries and regions since its creation in 1987, including such world-class theaters as Carnegie Hall in the United States and La Scala Theatre in Italy. Its spring 2006 tour will include performances in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver, BC.

“These disabled performers are a great inspiration to everyone who sees them,” said Washington Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, who recently met with officials with the troupe’s parent organization, the China Disabled Persons’ Federation, while in Beijing.

Owen said he has endorsed the tour in the interest of promoting cultural exchanges with China, one of Washington state’s leading partners in trade, as well as to highlight the disabled performers’ wealth of talent.

“The troupe represents a truly landmark cultural achievement for China and the world, looking beyond the disability to recognize each artist’s individual talent, then bringing these individuals together in performances that celebrate the inspiring, universal language of art,” the lieutenant governor said.

Tickets to the Seattle performance are available by calling 206-292-ARTS or through Ticketmaster at http://www.ticketmaster.com (search for “My Dream”).
