Lt. Governor’s
office displays OLYMPIA – Several works by Seattle artist Barbara Earl Thomas are now on display at the office of Lt. Gov. Brad Owen in the Legislative Building.
Thomas crafts her paintings using thin layers of egg tempera (made from finely ground dry pigments, egg yolk and water). Some of her works incorporate silver leaf as well. Subdued in color, her paintings feature human figures tossed in tumultuous seas or skies, often intertwined with birds and imagery of fire. Works on display include “Last Book, Last Fire,” “Flying Blind,” “Trees in Firelight” and several others. The award-winning artist, who is the deputy director and curator for the Northwest African American Museum, has previously exhibited at numerous venues across western Washington and outside of the state. She studied at the University of Washington and at the University of Grenoble in France. Founded in 1996, the Lieutenant Governor’s Art Council features Washington artists. Artists are nominated by a review of their works and based on themes chosen by the council. Works and featured artists change each quarter. The council is chaired by Linda Owen, wife of the lieutenant governor.
The Office of the Lieutenant Governor is open to the public from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m. It is located at 220 Legislative Building, 416 Sid Snyder
Avenue S.W. For more information contact: Brian Dirks (360) 786-7707 or dirks.brian@leg.wa.gov or Tracy Chavez
