Dedicating the Cervantes
Center
at the University of Washington

Lt. Gov. Owen helped
dedicate the new Cervantes Center at the University of Washington on
March 8 in Seattle. The center, sponsored by the Spanish government and
the UW, will offer both linguistic training and cultural offerings for
both the University and the Seattle region. It is just one of four in
the United States.

de Basterrechea, director of development of the Cervantes Institute in
Madrid, Spain; Bill Gates Sr.; Owen; UW President Mark Emmert;
Luis
Fernando Esteban, Spain's vice consul in Washington state; Tony Geist,
chairman of the Division of Spanish and Portuguese Studies; and Jose
Ignacio Callen, director of the UW Cervantes Institute.
The center became a
possibility two years ago when the lieutenant governor, Geist, Gates and
Esteban visited with
Cervantes Institute officials in Spain.
